About the Item

Antique Ainu Sword Holder (Emushat), Japan Emushats were worn over the shoulder and served to limit movement of a short sword and keep it in place. Mostly constructed of linden fiber (shinafu) tightly woven to a cotton core, the main body of the emushat is impressively robust. Attached at bottom are two cotton squares embellished with appliqué and couched stitching in a traditional Ainu motif. Width: 15 inches, Height: 24 inches Late 19th C
