Antique Nepalese Butter Churn Handle
About the Item
Antique Nepalese Butter Churn Handle. Known as a Ghurra, individually carved from a single piece of wood having different geometric forms, a circle, a rectangle and a double frustum. A supplementary relief pattern is carved overall. Rich patina from years of use. Mounted on a contemporary black metal stand.
Signs of wear and use overall fine condition.
8 in. high x 2.75 in. wide x 2.25 in. deep. overall. (203 x 70 x 58 mm).

Ghurra is a churning rod holder in the assembly for churning milk into butter. They harken back to the Hindu creation myth of churning the sea of milk by the gods and demons, emblematic of the endless struggle of good and evil. Their individuality and principal of form evoke special spiritual significance to the mountain people of Nepal.
