About the Item

Democratic Republic of Congo, Late 19th Century Wood, glass bead (inlay) Provenance: Didier Claes – Danisc Collection (Ole Christiansen) A rare and elegant example of a Kuba palm wine cup, this sculptural vessel exemplifies the refined artistry of the Kuba Kingdom. Carved from richly patinated hardwood, the cup takes the form of a stylized human head—likely referencing royal or noble lineage—featuring a high-domed coiffure, concentric ear spirals, and a powerful neck ring motif symbolizing prestige and strength. The facial features are rendered with classical Kuba restraint: almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, and closed lips convey a serene, idealized expression. The elaborate coiffure, finely incised in cross-hatched patterns, indicates high status and stylistic affiliation with Kuba court iconography. A rare embellishment—a blue glass bead inlay at the forehead—adds a jewel-like element that enhances the piece's spiritual and visual impact. Originally used in elite courtly rituals, this type of palm wine cup was both functional and symbolic, reserved for ceremonial use by titled members of Kuba society. Today, it stands as a testament to one of Central Africa’s most sophisticated artistic traditions. Mounted on a custom wood and metal base Dimensions: total heigth with base 20.6 cm, cup 15.5 cm Condition: Fine age-related patina, minor stable cracks at base, bead securely set. 🔍 Ex-collection: Acquired from Didier Claes, one of Europe’s most respected dealers in Central African art. Formerly part of the Danisc Collection curated by Ole Christiansen, Denmark.
