Kuba African Anthropomorphic Double Head Palm Wine Cup

About the Item

An unusual and exceptionally carved Central African tribal anthropomorphic wooden double head palm wine cup originating from the Kuba Kingdom and dating from the 20th century. The Kuba kingdom produced its best artwork at the height of its power in the second half of the 19th century. The federation embraces around 19 groups, including the Kete, the Bushoong, the ruling clan. The best-known carvings are the ndop portrait statues of Bushoong nyimi (kings). Other figurative sculpture is rare, but masks are carved for use in religious ceremonies. Many Kuba tribes carve boxes and anthropomorphic palm wine cups, the finest of which are by Lele and Wongo artists. This stunning wooden palm wine cup is unusual and was possibly made as a marriage piece. The well hand carved cup stands raised on two carved legs with simply carved feet base with the cups carved as stylized heads with relief carved ears and arms to the sides and with relief carved facial features. Both hollowed-out cups have raised round carved drinking rims with carved hair features. The cup has a wonderful, aged patina and both cups seem to be linked internally by a carved-out hole to the inside base of each cup. The palm wine cup is not marked. Provenance: From the private collection of a gentleman and acquired in the UK Art Market. In very good condition wear associated with age and use.
