Model "K2-47" Brass Pendant Lamp by Maria Lindeman for Idman, Finland ca 1950s

About the Item

At the Tenth Milan Triennial in 1954, Finland received the largest relative proportion of available prizes. A new era had begun: the 1950s and 1960s became known as the golden age of Finnish design, a title that is well deserved as evidenced by this beautiful mid-century pendant lamp. Minimalism has always been at the heart of Finnish design, with the philosophy that every element should serve a purpose without unnecessary embellishment. Finnish lighting fixtures continue to represent this idea through clean lines, geometric shapes and understated elegance. This lamp is a timeless example of the enduring appeal of Finnish mid-century design. The lamp's design was developed around its delicate and angular structure. Suspended from a sleek rod that extends from the ceiling canopy, the lamp features an open-frame outline resembling a diamond shape. This frame, made of thin, elegant brass, forms the primary visual element of the piece and gives it the highlight it deserves. It is the bulb's warm glow that further complements the brass frame, enhancing the overall golden shine. A wonderful thing about pendant lamps—besides their stylish look—is that they are an excellent option for making interiors appear more spacious. They can focus light or add an accent to the room. During the 1950s and 1960s, Maria Lindeman became one of the voices in constructing Finnish modernism. This model 'K2-47' shows off the Finnish designer’s most characteristic design elements, including a sculptural, modern look based on the visual interaction of materials and angles. The lamp's clean lines and harmonious proportions highlight the quality of its construction, and the design prowess of Lindeman. One of the hallmarks of Finnish lighting design is its seamless blend into architecture and interior design. Light fixtures, like this 'K2-47' model, are designed to complement their surroundings while making a distinct visual statement. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 15.75 in W x 7.48 in D x 29.92 in H 40 cm W x 19 cm D x 76 cm H About the designer: Maria Lindeman was born in Wiborg, Finland (Viipuri), and studied from 1939 to 1945 at Taideteollisuuskeskuskoulu, now known as the Aalto University School of Arts, Design, and Architecture in Helsinki. In 1953, Lindeman took part in a competition of lighting fixtures, announced by the Idman company. This competition resulted in a full-time job as the Idman’s artistic designer The Idman company at that time was the biggest lighting manufacturer in Finland, exporting lighting fixtures globally, and Lindeman’s designs varied to include both modern and classical forms. During the 1950s and 1960s, Lindeman became one of the voices in constructing Finnish modernism, a participating member in the formulation of the Golden Age of Finnish design.
