Peill & Putzler Large Pair of 1970s Smoked Glass Biomorphic Wall Sconces Lights
About the Item
Large pair of mid-century 'Futura' or commonly referred to as 'Wave' flush mount ceiling or wall lights / sconces by Peill & Putzler in the 1970s. This is an absolutely Classic piece of design, featuring a smoked coloured (colored) glass globe shade with a waved/ribbed molded bubble form, casting a beautiful rippled light across a wall or ceiling. These are often misattributed to Koch & Lowy , but they have nothing to do with that company - from our research, there appears to be a connection to a design to Carlo Nason for Mazzega but we have yet to have confirmed that.
With its biomorphic, futuristic shape which echoes that of the Space Age race of that era the light looks great paired with any items made of acrylic or items with bold "Space Age" forms.

Newly rewired to EU standards (240Volts) and should also work on US standards (120Volts) - each light requires a single E27 screw fit light bulb (150Watt max).

Peill & Putzler
Transforming light manufacturing into an aesthetic art form, Peill & Putzler is synonymous with futuristic globular glassworks. It was a massive operation at the peak of its production, creating mid-century modern designs and employing up to 1,500 workers. Its table lamps, wall lights and chandeliers and pendants are anything but mundane and are admired today for their innovative artistry.
The melding of two great, independent glassworks companies in 1947 to form Peill & Putzler occurred at the beginning of a postwar design surge. Peill und Sohn, founded in 1903, was led by Leopold Peill, a philanthropist and glassmaker. Originally from Pieńsk in today’s Poland, the Putzler brothers were well-established glass producers known for kerosene street lighting. The synthesis of the two companies established the renowned glassworks and a lighting company. The site of its glassworks factory in Düren, Germany, became the home of this integrated partnership.
In 1953, the German Design Council was formed, with Peill & Putzler as a founding member. The council is essential today, bringing social awareness, support and knowledge transfer to design companies and providing beneficial tools for their success.
Heading the company at this time were Günther Peill and Hans Ahrenkiel. The pair were experimental with the designs the company produced. Advancing technologies supported industrial production, allowing the company to manufacture pieces that were as much art as functional objects.
Designers of note who worked with Peill & Putzler and contributed to its acclaim included Aloys Ferdinand Gangkofner, Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Helmut Demary, William Brown, Horst Tüselmann and Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg. Collaboratively, they produced stunning flush mount lighting, candle holders and vases and vessels.

Set of Peill & Putzler wall light ceiling lights, polished brass and glass, 1970s. Each sculptural ceiling light consists of clear glass cubes on a square brass frame which beautifully reflects the light with a warm glow.
The quality thick clear glass cubic shades have a Brutalist textured pattern at the bottom of each base, creating depth and a three-dimensional decorative effect. The shades screw by metal rings to the frame.
Also designed to work as a wall light, this piece can be fitted through holes in the brass frame hidden beneath the glass shades. The dimensions of each glass cube are height 3.9" (10 cm), width 3.9" (10 cm), depth 3.9" (10 cm).
Well-wired, in full working order and ready to use. The frames and all the glass cubes are in good condition.
Photographed with clear Pygmy light bulbs 15 watts but can take other types of light bulbs, such as E14 crown gold 40 watts. LED compatible.
