About the Item

Absolutely stnning 1930 table or floor lamp in gilt metal and with a glass globe. Made in France by Maison Jansen, ca. 1930 The Paris-based firm Maison Jansen — or simply Jansen — created some of the most spectacular interiors of its time. Founded in 1880, the company was active across the late 19th and much of the 20th century, during the golden era of the Beaux-Arts. Initially renowned among the French Third Republic’s elite, Jansen gained international prestige by the turn of the century. Its clients included royalty from England, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. From 1905 through the 1980s, Jansen distributed its luxurious creations via a network of satellite offices across North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Though the firm closed its headquarters at 9 Rue Royale in Paris in 1989, Jansen’s iconic aesthetic remains highly sought after today. Its signature style blends 18th-century Bourbon opulence with Hollywood theatricality and the refined charm of English country houses — a look that continues to inspire and be emulated worldwide. This masterpiece is in great condition considering the age.

He studied at l’Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris (1914-22) where he spent the period during World War I working on the preservation of works of art. While attending l’Ecole he became friends with the architect Jean Lurcat and his brothers, Andre and Paul Vera. In 1924 he exhibited his first pieces of furniture at the Salon d’Automne. He had a preference for poetic living spaces and felt that people deserved better than Corbusier’s “machines for living in”. He was anxious to introduce aspects of the marvelous into architecture and living spaces. His creations drew upon the classical, baroque, and rococo styles. Moreux’s well-known clients included the Baron Robert de Rothschild and Bolette Natanson...
