About the Item

Finnish designer, Carin Lisa Johansson-Pape, was among the most significant Finnish lighting designers in the second half of the 1900s. She designed furniture for Stockmann from 1937, and from 1942 she designed for the Stockmann owned lighting factory, Orno. This table lamp has an essentially Nordic modern look, with a combination of interesting material choices and design. The triangular body is made of a solid block of wood and is covered in leather with a polished brass neck under the shade. This trio of materials had been very popular throughout the Nordic countries during the mid-century era, as it lent an innovative, modern look to the designs. The body narrows towards the top, creating the traditional look. The lampshade’s drum shape contributes to this look as well, while it balances out the thick leather wrapped base. The fabric of the shade is in an off-white colour and features a black trim on the edges, allowing for an elegant and stylish look that stands out even more when the lamp is lit. Combined with the dark leather, the lamp offers a variety of points of visual interest. Johansson-Pape once said "A lamp is not the actual purpose, but more like an instrument. It must fulfill its purpose as a provider of light, but at the same time, it must also satisfy the aesthetic demands. A good light fixture must be simple, and its structure and function must be both neat and correct". This table lamp is a perfect example of this sentiment and would make a lovely addition to any interior. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor scratches on the leather. The shade is a later replacement. Minor scratches. Dimensions: 12.59 in Ø x 25.59 in H 32 cm Ø x 65 cm H

Lisa Johansson-Pape Table Lamp Manufactured by Orno, Finland, 1950

Lisa Johansson-Pape Table lamp Manufactured by Orno Finland, 1950 Brass, leather, canvas shade From the archives of Side Gallery. Barcelona Measurements 10 cm x 10 cm x 69 H cm 3.93 in x 3.93 in x 27.10 H in Literature Design Musuem, Lisa Johansson-Pape, Helsinki, 1986; Ornamo, Helsinki, 1962 Bio Finnish designer Lisa Johansson-Pape enjoyed a long and varied career in lighting, furniture, textile, and ceramic design. She was one of Finland’s leading lighting designers in the 20th century and was instrumental in promoting Finnish design internationally. Born in 1907, Lisa Johansson-Pape studied at the Industrial Art Institute in Helsinki University of Art & Design (Now Aalto University of Art & Design), graduating in 1928. She worked as a furniture designer for Kylmäkoski and Stockmann and created carpets for the Friends of Finnish Handicraft, before turning her attention to lighting design. She collaborating with the Stockmann-owned lighting factory Orno from 1942, famously remarking, “it was quite by accident that I became a design light artist. By education, I am a furniture designer, but I had to make lamps during the war.” Notable designs include the Lisa (1947), Sipuli (1954), and Laura (1957) pendant lamps. The Sipuli, often referred to by the English translation Onion, resembles the form of the vegetable for which it was named. The angular design in opaline glass was awarded a gold medal at the Triennale di Milano in 1954, which was just one of several prizes Johansson-Pape received in her career; she was also awarded a silver medal at the 1951 Triennale...
