Antique 19th-century French gold leaf gilt gadrooned Louis Philippe mirror
About the Item
On offer here is a beautiful antique gold leaf-gilded Louis Philippe mirror from southern France. This mirror dates back to around 1870 and features rounded upper corners characteristic of the Louis Philippe style. Crafted in the south of France, it is constructed on a frame of solid pine wood smoothed with a layer of gesso. The frame is adorned with a decorative ornamental carved band on the most elevated part of the frame. A painted black inner border is rare for this type of mirror but adds great definition to the piece. A classic pearl beading surrounds the original mirror plate.
The mirror frame was completely gold leaf gilt and polished. The gold gilding displays a beautiful deep gloss with the undercoat shining through. Parts where the gold was polished more, show more red undercoat that gives the gold a warm appearance. The mirror frame remains in good antique condition, displaying a beautifully developed patina over the years.
The mirror glass is authentic, featuring a silver nitrate gilded glass plate. The glass plate shows a few marks and small spots, but is in remarkably good condition taking its age into consideration.
The original wooden back and mirror were delicately removed from the frame, thoroughly cleaned, and securely reattached. This exquisite piece embodies classic craftsmanship and carries the unique charm of its age.
