Antique 19th Century French Worn Gold Leaf Gilt Louis Philippe Mirror with Crest
About the Item
This beautiful antique mirror was made in France around 1880. It is a pure Louis Philippe mirror with its upper rounded corners and elegant frame. The most elevated part and outer mould of the frame have a red bole undercoat, while the rest of the frame shows the bone color of the gesso. This difference in undercoat is common on mirrors from this era. It was done to achieve subtle variations in gold color to enhance depth and definition. A classic pearl beading surrounds the glass. The mirror has an ornate crest that features a central bowl with flowers flanked by C scrolls, acanthus, and floral elements. The mirror frame was completely gold leaf gilt and polished. The gold leaf was glued to the frame by the use of a water based glue. Due to excessive cleaning with a moist cloth, the gold leaf has faded over the many years. The mirror has its original silver nitrate silvered glass. The glass shows a few small spots and scratches all in line with its great age of nearly 150 years old.
The mirror plate was removed from the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned. The glass was reinserted and a few parts of the pine back cladding were replaced. As a result of the faded gold leaf, the mirror has a more natural look and feel. The mirror is without damage, clean and ready for use.
