About the Item

This beautiful French gold gilt mirror was made in France, circa 1880. It is made in the chinoiserie style that came into fashion in the mid-19th century. It has a faux bamboo frame with an oval center mirror. The frame is enriched with wine ranks, leafs and grapes. The mirror is made in the typical French manner with a solid pine structure smoothened with gesso and red earth. The ornaments were casted and reinforced with steel wiring. The faux bamboo frame is completely gold leaf gilt and the red bole (red earth base layer) shines through the gold and give the gold an extra warm appearance. The ornaments are mostly gilt by the use of gold paint. The gold paint was made by solving gold dust in clear varnish. This “two-tone” gilding is common practice for mirrors from this era. It gives the frame multiple shades of gold and therefor enhanced definition. (The practical reason is, that it is much easier to polish gold leaf on flat surfaces.) This mirror has its old silver mirror plates and its orginal panelled pine back. The mirror plates have some wear, especially the smaller ones in the cornerr. Here we see some chipping of the paint that should attach the silver to the glass. However, it contributes to the look and feel of this old mirror. The central mirror has a few small spots but is very good given its age. This particular model mirror has been reproduced a hundred years later by Mirror Fair NY. This shows the timeless appeal of this beautiful mirror.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. Condition det: This mirror has undergone minor repairs in our workshop. The frame as made solid again and e few spots were repaired. Also, the back was removed and the whole mirror was cleaned from dust. It is now without damages and ready for use.
