Antique 19th Century French Large Scale Oval Gold Gilt Mirror with Crest

About the Item

A beautiful and nature-inspired antique oval mirror that was made in France circa 1860. The most elevated part of the frame has a bark shape and is decorated with flowers and leaves. The frame is decorated with an intricate crest of the top and below. The top crest features a central bow-tied ribbon and is surrounded by delicate branches, leaves, and flowers. The mirror is partially gold leaf gilt and it shows remains of black and gold paint on an off-white base. The frame has built up a beautiful patina over the many years. Both mirror glass and pine back cladding are original to the piece The glass has a beveled edge and was silver nitrate silvered (no mercury silvering). The glass plate shows some scratches and spots consistent with its age and use. This unique mirror is of exceptional quality with its delicate decoration and large size. It is complete, solid, and ready to be installed.

  • Condition:
    Repaired: A few branches in the top ornament were repaired. Wear consistent with age and use. The back cladding and mirror plate were removed in our atelier. The whole piece was gently cleaned. The glass was firmly reinserted. The mirror is complete and in good authentic condition.
