About the Item

Important Mirror by Emile André, "Le Coq Français Triomphant de L'Aigle Allemand" after JOB, Art Nouveau, 1916 Description: This exceptional mantel or overmantel mirror, signed and dated by Emile André, is a work of Art Nouveau created in 1916, during the height of World War I. A true symbol of the period, this piece embodies both the art of metalworking and a strong patriotic message that left a lasting impact at the time. The frame of the mirror is an intricate composition of wood covered with copper and brass sheets. The materials are carefully nailed, repoussé, and patinated to create a rich and complex texture, typical of the craftsmanship of the time. Fine glass beads are delicately arranged to complete the decoration, adding a touch of refinement and sophistication. The Main Scene: Located in the upper part of the mirror, this scene is a reinterpretation of the famous propaganda poster by illustrator JOB (Jacques Onfroy de Bréville). It depicts the French rooster, emblem of the Republic, triumphing over the imperial German eagle. The eagle’s crown, symbol of imperial power, lies on the ground, while a new day of peace (symbolized by the rising dawn) appears on the horizon. This powerful motif conveys the hope of a peaceful future following the end of the conflict. The laurel and oak leaves that adorn the frame are classic symbols of military victory, emphasizing the message of triumph and renewal. The Mirror: The glass is beveled and in good condition. Manufacturing Details: The mirror is signed and dated on the back, confirming its authenticity: "Made by E. André in the year 1916 - on April 23rd André." This inscription enhances the historical value of the piece and attests to the exceptional craftsmanship of the artist. Condition: This piece is in remarkable condition, well-preserved, and showcases the quality of its craftsmanship. The natural aging of the materials, along with slight traces of time, only enhance the beauty of the piece, accentuating its authentic and historic character. Dimensions: Height: 152 cm Width: 80 cm Depth: 4 cm This unique work is a rare opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind Art Nouveau piece directly linked to the history of World War I and the propaganda of the time, while also being a majestic and timeless decorative object. A unique piece not to be missed, now available on our specialized high-end antiques website. For any further information or shipping quote requests, our team is at your disposal.
