Trumeau Frances Napoleon III, Mirror and oil on canvas “Landscape at sunset”

About the Item

Amazing and beautiful trumeau mirror , made in France during the Napoleon III era, is composed of a mirror and an oil painting on canvas. The trumeau is a type of decorative mirror originating in France in the 18th century, characterized by being mounted on a wooden structure, typically adorned with carvings or decorative paintings, especially on the upper part of the mirror, and frequently gilded. The carvings were usually in high relief, with motifs such as musical instruments, flowers or decorative braiding. Trumeaux were often installed above fireplaces or between windows, being prominent elements in the interiors of French aristocratic houses during the Rococo and Neoclassical styles. In this case, the trumeau features an impressive painting above and, below, a silvered mirror, all supported by a carved wooden frame gilded with fine gold. The painting, an oil on canvas from the 19th century, shows a peaceful rural landscape, typical of genre painting of the period. The characters depicted appear to be peasants or villagers, reflecting everyday life in the countryside. In the foreground, a winding road meanders through a mountainous landscape, and on it some human figures, some on horseback and others on foot. This light earthy-toned path extends from the lower center of the painting to a background in which stands a small, simple, rural white house. The mountains, painted in dark, bluish tones, provide depth and distance. Although the trees are few, the foliage growing from the hillsides provides texture and variety to the surroundings. The soft, diffused light contributes to the serene atmosphere of the scene. There are no stark shadows, and the even lighting reinforces the tranquility. In the background, hills and mountains, under a clear sky, complete the scene. This landscape reflects a tendency towards romanticism, especially in the idealization of rural and natural life. The soft and warm color palette, with a predominance of orange and pink tones, reinforces the atmosphere of calm and serenity, evoking the light of the evening. These mirrors not only had a practical function, but were also a status symbol, demonstrating the refined taste of their owners. In addition, the use of the mirror visually enlarged the spaces, while the upper ornamentation added an artistic touch to the interior decoration. Its elongated profile makes it an exquisite and highly decorative piece. Style and period Napoleon III or Second Empire The Napoleon III or Second Empire style gets its name because it was born in France at that time. Strictly speaking, the Second Empire was proclaimed in 1852 and ended in 1870, led by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of the French, although in the artistic sense it extended a few years further (until 1880). This style was very well received by the French bourgeoisie. The Emperor himself was involved in the artistic development of the time, although more closely linked to architecture. However, it is Empress Eugénie who is responsible for the evolution of the decorative arts. Although it is inspired by the styles of the past, starting with Classical Antiquity, the Renaissance, even by Louis XVI, much loved by Eugénie, the most representative characteristic of the style is sumptuousness and ostentation, always aspiring to show wealth and opulence. It is not a style designed specifically for the Second Empire, but a recovery of the different great French styles of the previous centuries, a kind of compilation of French decorative trends. Special reference is made to Louis XIV, Louis XV, Baroque and Rococo, and gradually Louis XVI, which was based on eclecticism. In short, the decorative styles that had positioned France at the forefront of interior design and furniture design in Europe, both for quality and for originality and beauty.
