About the Item
An elegant and most decorative French 18th century Louis XVI Period Giltwood barometer, signed Lepage 1767. This wonderful barometer is set within an intricately carved Giltwood frame with outer acanthus leaf designs and inner double beaded bands. The hand painted background of the barometer displays a circular chart indicating the weather conditions on the outer edge, with the signature of Lepage at the bottom center, and dated 1767. Above is the impressive pierced top crown displaying a globe at the center, scroll and measuring instruments. The barometer is finished with a stunning and most decorative floral wreath. All original gilt and patina throughout.
Lepage was a distinguished French barometer and scientific instrument maker active during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Known for exceptional craftsmanship and precision, Lepage’s instruments combined the elegance of French decorative arts with the growing scientific curiosity of the Enlightenment. Often encased in finely carved and gilded wood, his barometers were favored by the elite for their beauty and reliability. Today, pieces signed Lepage à Paris are highly sought after for their historical significance and refined neoclassical design.
