About the Item
A truly stunning and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Giltwood mirror. This very impressive double framed mirror with its original mirror plates is framed in a dentil patterned inner band fitted to the beveled mirror plate. The slender outer mirror plates are tastefully accented with etched stars throughout and is partially covered on all corners and each central reserve by exquisitely detailed carvings. The carvings on each corner display blooming flowers surrounded by berried acanthus leaves, while the central reserves on the three sides contain crest shaped pendants with scrolling acanthus leaves. The top reserve differs from the other three reserves with its bust of a winged cherub and a carved scallop above. The bold outer frame contains bands of foliate carvings and detailed carvings in each corner. The carvings in each corner are decorated by scrolling acanthus leaves and berried bands. The unique top crown of this wonderful mirror contains a concave opening in the center being flanked by two nude maidens laying atop an angled plateau and dressed in flowing Mecca garments.
