19th Century French Wig Stand by Louis Danjard

About the Item

This Surreal-looking object was made as a wig stand in mid-19th century France by Louis Danjard. It was probably in the legendary Folk Art collection of the important American sculptor Elie Nadelman. It was owned by his friend and patron, A. Stewart Walker, the architect of the Fuller Building in Manhattan, who commissioned Nadelman to sculpt the bas-relief over the entrance. This wig stand is the only example of Folk Art in Walker's collection. He also commissioned Nadelman to sculpt portrait heads of his wife and children. It's now displayed in a modern bell jar that's 23" by 13 1/2".
