Pair of 1920s French Sconces

About the Item

Madcap, whimsical, spritely, over-the-top -- these are just a few of the adjectives that spring to mind in describing this stylish pair of 1920s French sconces. Their steel frames are silvered, strewn with crystal prisms and cut-and-blown-glass beads that mostly clear, but some are amethyst, amber, and pink. The sconces are attenuated to the point of excess, with fronds that spring from vasiform bases, which are equipped with sockets screened by glass-beaded trelliswork, and embedded with tiny knobs for turning them on and off. The sconces are similar to those by the well-known Paris firm Baguès, but some of the parts, like the tear-shaped pink-glass pendants and silvered-metal leaves, don't correspond with those that they typically used. That said, their delicate forms and whispy sprays can be found in the fixtures made by a less-well-known Paris firm, Mildé et Fils, also known as Charles Mildé et Cie.

  • Pair of 1930s Veronese Glass Sconces
    By Veronese, Jean-Gabriel Domergue
    Located in New York, NY
Véronese was established in 1931 by Marcel Barbier. The firm was unique in having a design office in Paris and a glasswork on Murano. They developed a product line of clear translucent glass that was promoted through extensive advertising, and sold from striking modern showrooms in Paris and Nice. Their master glassblower was Giovanni Veronese, but the name was probably meant to evoke the 17th century Venetian painter Paolo Veronese, who depicted glassware and other luxury goods. Launched during the Depression, Véronese devised a lean business model. Rather than having an in-house art director they commissioned designs from independent architects, like Marcel Roux...
