A large set of forty-eight volumes of the Waverley Novels by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Bound by Morrell, London.
Complete in forty-eight volumes. With a frontispiece and vignette title to each volume. Written by Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish historian, poet, playwright, and novelist. The 'Waverley' novels were some of the most popular and widely read novels of the time when they were published, increasing Scott's reputation to become one of the most recognisable literary names of the Georgian era. In his last years, Scott marked these novels as a collection, now officially known as the Waverley Novels, which are considered his Magnum Opus containing much original verse and playing a significant part in the development of the modern historical genre. The series was originally release between 1814 and 1832. This set includes: Waverley; or, 'Tis Sixty Years Since, complete in two volumes, 1829. Guy Mannering; or, The Astrologer, complete in two volumes, 1829. The Antiquary, complete in two volumes, 1829. Rob Roy, complete in two volumes, 1829. Old Mortality, complete in two volumes, 1830. Heart of Mid-Lothian, complete in two volumes, 1830. Bride of Lammermoor, complete in two volumes, 1830. A Legend of Montrose, complete in one volume, 1830. Ivanhoe: A Romance, complete in two volumes, 1830. The Monastery, complete in two volumes, 1830. The Abbot; Being the Sequel to The Monastery, complete in two volumes, 1831. Kenilworth, complete in two volumes, 1831. The Pirate, complete in two volumes, 1831. The Fortunes of Nigel, complete in two volumes, 1831. Peverill of the Peal, complete in three volumes, 1831. Quentin Durward, complete in two volumes, 1831. St. Ronan's Well, complete in two volumes, 1832. Redgauntlet, complete in two volumes, 1832. The Betrothed, complete in one volume, 1832. The Talisman, complete in one volume, 1832. Woodstock, complete in two volumes, 1832. The Highland Widow, complete in one volume, 1832. Fair Maid of Perth, complete in two volumes, 1832. Previously held in the library of Sir Walter Johnston Halsey, sometime Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Hertfordshire and Middlesex, and chair of Legal Insurance Co. Bound by Morrell, London.
In the original half red calf with red cloth boards. Externally, smart with very minor rubbing to the extremities, particularly to the head of the spines. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light occasional scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Morrell, London.
