1820-1825 Works of Sir Walter Scott

About the Item

A stunning full calf fine binding of the first editions of these important works by prolific and renowned writer Sir Walter Scott. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish novelist and poet. Scott remains a celebrated figure in Scottish literary history, and the landscape of Scotland features heavily in his works. He was also a political figure, prominent within the Tory establishment, and served as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for twelve years, between 1820 and 1832. He was a member of Clan Scott, a prominent Scottish clan. This set comprises seventeen volumes. Published anonymously, 'by the Author of Waverley, Ivanhoe etc'. From the library of Sir Robert Johnson Eden, 5th Baronet of West Auckland (1774-1844); containing his bookplate. 'The Abbot' (1820) is complete in three volumes. It is a historical novel following on from the plot of the Monastery, and details the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots. 'Kenilworth' (1821) is complete in three volumes. It is a historical romance, leading up to the reception of Queen Elizabeth at Kenilworth Castle. 'The Pirate' (1822) is complete in three volumes. It is set upon the main island of Shetland and inspired by the life of John Gow, a notorious pirate. 'Peveril of the Peak' (1822) is complete in four volumes. It is Scott's longest novel, and explores the Popish Plot of the late seventeenth century. 'Tales of the Crusaders' is complete in four volumes, and comprises two of Scott's historical novels: 'The Betrothed' and 'The Talisman'. 'The Betrothed' is set in the 12th century, and 'The Talisman' during the Third Crusade. In a full calf binding with gilt spines. Externally, very smart; a stain to the title of Kenilworth Vol II, otherwise the spines are a touch rubbed, with a little bumping to extremities. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, generally firmly bound, with the first volume of 'THe Pirate' and 'Peveril of the Peak' strained slightly after the title page; the prefatory note of volume I of 'Peveril' is slightly detached. Pages are bright and clean with just the occasional spot. Overall: Near Fine

  • 1929-1933 The Works of Shakespeare
    By William Shakespeare
    Located in Bath, GB
A fantastic, bright set of this Nonesuch limited edition of William Shakespeare's works. The first edition of this Nonesuch set. A super set with much more even colour than usually seen. With the text based on the first folio, with quarto variants and a selection of modern readings. It follows the text of the First Folio faithfully, in its misprints and intermittent use of a comma for a full stop at the close of an uninterrupted speech. The editors note describes in detail the intention and treatment regarding substantive errors between the early editions. Numbered 60 of 1600 copies of this work, which have been designed by Francis Meynell and printed by Walter Lewis, printer to the University at the Cambridge University Press. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press...
