About the Item

The first edition of this novel with a lovely association, signed by the author and her mother to the politician Alfred Milner. The first edition, first impression. A presentation copy from Vita Sackville-West and her mother, Victoria Sackville, inscribed to the recto of the front endpaper, 'To Mr. A. Milner, from his neighbours, V. Sackville and V. Sackville-West. July 1922'. Alfred Milner, the 1st Viscount Milner, was a colonial administrator and statesman, who was an important member of David Lloyd George's War Cabinet. He had a long and important career, key to the formulation of Britain's foreign and domestic policy from the mid 1890s to the early 1920s. 'The Heir' follows insurance salesman Mr. Chase as he finds that he has inherited a manor from a relative. Though he finds the house a burden and impractical, he finds himself drawn to the estate, just as he had set the plans in motion to sell the house. Written by the noted Bloomsbury author Vita Sackville-West, well known today for her friendship and relationship with fellow author, Virginia Woolf. Sackville-West provided the inspiration for Woolf's beloved novel 'Orlando'. Sackville-West was also a noted garden designer at her house Sissinghurst, the garden of which is still celebrated today. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Spine and head of the front board are a little faded. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a small tear to the head of the spine. A few light marks to the boards and spine, heavier to the head of the front board. Spots to the paste downs and endpapers. Inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages ae bright and clean. Overall: Very Good
