This is the FIRST EDITION of COLERIDGE'S FIRST BOOK OF POEMS. A. S. W. Rosenbach deemed it "An important literary volume." (Rosenbach 29:108). It includes four sonnets by Charles Lamb, marking his first appearance in print (Effusions VII, XI, XII, XIII, signed with the letters C. L.) The Preface advises, 'The Effusions signed C.L. were written by Mr. Charles Lamb, of the India House - independently of the signature their superior merit would have sufficiently distinguished them'. London: Printed for G.G. and J. Robinsons, and J. Cottle, Bookseller, Bristol, 1796. First Edition. Small 8vo; 6 1/4 x 3 7/8 inches (158 x 98 mm); xvi, 188, (1 errata) pp. Complete with errata. Near contemporary mottled calf binding with gilt decorative frame on boards and on spine; gilt title on red morocco label; gilt geometric motif on turnins, marbled edpapers, marbled edges; spine and hinges expertly repaired, binding square, pages evenly and lightly toned on edges, signature N containing notes and errata a bit toned, as usual, else clean clean and unmarked. Bookseller ticket, dedicatory note in ink and Bookplate tipped in on f.f.e.; previous owner's small ms. signature on title page.
