Presented is a handsome 1868 printing of Edward C. Barber’s The Crack Shot; Or Young Rifleman’s Complete Guide. The book was simultaneously published in New York by W. A. Townsend & Adams and in London by Sampson, Low, Son, & Marston; this is the New York printing. The book is in its original green cloth boards, with a gilt deer embossed on the front and gilt titles and elaborate gilt rifles and hunting dog illustrations to the spine. It is accompanied by a new archival slipcase with a gilt rifle embossed on the front. The book offers young readers instruction and guidance on rifle shooting, for hunting and sport, with detailed lessons on principles of firing projectiles, American and foreign rifles, American and European breech-loaders, how to choose, use, clean and care for a rifle, target practice, and the use of hounds in hunting. Barber also covers the tactics used for hunting specific game, with individual chapters for bison, moose, caribou, deer, and turkey shooting. Barber explains his aim in writing the book, was “to impart to the young and aspiring sportsman such a bird’s-eye view of the chief things he has to learn and attend to, as will greatly facilitate his acquisition of the whole art of shooting game of every kind.” This book is artfully illustrated throughout, with black and white in-text engravings and diagrams. CONDITION: In original green cloth binding with pictorial gilt stamp to the front board and gilt titles and stamps to the spine. Light bumping to the spine. Archival light touch-ups to the boards, repair to small hole in bottom of the spine. Interior pages with scattered light to moderate foxing and toning. Illustrated with numerous black and white engravings illustrations. Presented with a new archival green cloth slipcase with gilt rifle stamp to the front. Book Dimensions: 7 1/8" H x 5" W x 1" D. As explained in the beginning of the guidebook, the purpose of the book is “to give the reader a satisfactory general idea of the States and Territories of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, through which the traveler passes in going from the Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, or vice versa, entering or leaving California at its southern extremity.” Following the southern route of railways, editor Charles Gleed lays out in extensive detail information on each state, including population numbers, key industries, important towns and railway stations, farming and agriculture, mining opportunities, and weather patterns. Throughout the guidebook are countless engravings, both full page and in-text, from well known engravers of the time. Meant to further entice readers to take this overland journey, the illustrations offer views of key tourist spots, townviews, and scenic destinations, throughout the featured states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
