Carl Andre, Things in Their Elements
Located in New York, NY
Carl Andre (born 1935), the American minimalist artist, is perhaps best known for his grid-based floor sculptures but also for large, outdoor public artworks and small sculptures, poetry and installations. In this unprecedented comprehensive monograph Alistair Rider here shows that it is the materials that he uses to make his works that inspire him, from his controversial bricks to all sorts of metals, found wood, even hay bales, Andre is fascinated by what materials make up the world and presents them for contemplation.
Andre's early wood sculptures show the influence of Brancusi, who he had met through their mutual friend Hollis Frampton...

The Glory of Byzantium and Early Christendom
Located in New York, NY
Byzantine art established the images of the Christian religion that are still current today: the appearance, dress and attributes of Biblical figures all owe their invention to these early artists. The Byzantine Empire spanned the fourth to the fifteenth century, bridging the Middle Ages from the late Roman Empire to the early Renaissance, and of all the world's empires, it is most clearly defined by its art.
Presenting 300 artworks from the years 240 to 1453, The Glory of Byzantium and Early Christendom encapsulates the development of art in eastern Europe and eastern Mediterranean from the very early days of Christianity to the fall of Constantinople. Even when a more secular art developed during the early Renaissance, Byzantine art lived on as the dominant style for religious art, particularly in the Orthodox East. Nevertheless, a perception of Byzantine art as purely religious is misleading: while it included the production of glorious icons, it also encompassed metalwork, architecture, sculpture, wall painting and mosaics, but secular and Christian.
From architecture to jewellery, from coins to paintings, from mosaics to book illuminations, the book explores Byzantine art in all its forms. Unique not only for its extensive variety of art forms, the book also has a vast geographic Scope, including art from Britain to Syria, from Spain to Turkey, from Egypt to Georgia. An introductory essay by Antony Eastmond summarizes the essence of Byzantine and early Christian art...

By Ettore Sottsass
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A perfectly postmodern telephone designed by the Memphis Milano master, Ettore Sottsass, and produced in 1986. The Enorme phone was produced in another color way but this is the much rarer gray and black version. The Enorme telephone was the result of a collaboration between Sottsass and David Kelley, founder of the design firm IDEO. Sottsass created the conceptual design, and Kelley and his team were responsible for the engineering and detail design. To produce the telephone, the two formed the Enorme Corporation with Jean Pigozzi. Examples of this phone design are found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, RISD Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum.
