DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION SIGNED. 1 vol., 8-5/8" x 5-3/4", signed by the Forster on the title-page, bound in the publisher's original gilt lettered blue cloth, photograph of Forster and Eric Crozier tipped to the front blank endleaf titled beneath it "Photograph of E. M. Forster taken at Red House, Great Glemham, 24 August 1967 - when he autographed this book".
CONDITION: Foxing to edges of textblock as well as first and last leaves, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, mild general handling to cloth, overall A VERY GOOD COPY.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: RBH record only 3 signed copies EVER appearing at auction.
E. M. Forster first encountered Billy Budd in 1926. Some twenty years later, he embarked on a collaboration with Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier, adapting Melville’s novella for the opera stage.
