About the Item
Gillows: of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Cabinetmakers and International Merchants : A Furniture and Business History, by Susan E. Stuart. Rare 1st Ed 2 Volume Boxed Set, now out of print. Published by The Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2008. The definitive monograph on Gillows furniture and furniture designs. A Founding Member of the Regional Furniture Study Group (which became the Regional Furniture Society in 1984), Susan E. Stuart was a Council Member of the Regional Furniture Society from 1988-1993 and a Council Member of the Furniture History Society from 1995-1997. In 1997 she was awarded a Winterthur Fellowship (on the effect of furniture exports from Lancaster, England, on North American Furniture design). She lectures widely on clocks and furniture made in the North-west of England and has written books, booklets and numerous articles on clockcase work and furniture. She was Lecturer in Art and Design at Lancaster and Morecambe College from 1974 to 1993 and is currently Hon. Research Fellow at the Centre of North-west Regional Studies, Lancaster University. It also has a wider application by offering a firm chronology for the development of different types of western furniture. These books contain extracts from letters, sketch books and ledgers and all put together with photographs to show the company's development and history.

This is Gilpin's third in his series of works tracing picturesque beauty in British natural landscapes. In it he portrays the landscapes of Scottish Highlands, and describes them lyrically in his text. Prefacing the list of Prints at the end of the second volume, the author says "With regards to the prints, which adorn these volumes, I can only say..... that few of them pretend to be 'exact portraits.' They in general 'only characterize the countries,' through which the reader is carried." The illustrations, based on Gilpin's sketches, were etched by his nephew William Sawrey Gilpin using the newly invented aquatint process.
