Late 19th Early 20th Century Japanese Textile Swatch Book, Komon (Book)

About the Item

Dating from around 1900, this is a delightful album which has a collection of Japanese dyed cotton fabric swatches known as Komon. Komon was a Japanese design or pattern based on very small minute all over designs which are distinguished by the delicacy of the design and was used in garments worn at private functions or celebrations. What makes it so special is that all 136 samples over 34 pages are coloured Indigo and made of natural dyes. The designs could be put to many uses including the manufacture and design of modern fabrics for women's and men's fashions. It should be noted that the binding is now loose but could be repaired.
