Collection of 50 Shimacho 'Stripes' Textile Samples in a Handmade Box (Book)

About the Item

This is a beautiful box of fifty Shima/Shimacho Japanese textile design samples from the late 19th century or very early years of the 20th century. They are basically striped showing different weaving and dying patterns and techniques in Indigo and Blue, however there are examples in Brown and lattice patterns as well. Though there is no text with them, they were usually from a single weaver or family to showcase there designs. The box does have a 2 inch tear on the hinge and one or two small knocks to its extremities, these on no way affect the samples which are all in excellent condition.
