About the Item

Every year a well-known Danish artist designs the Georg Jensen Christmas Ornament. In its many incarnations over the years it has become a tradition representative of Danish handcrafts - and a much-loved decorations in many homes. Artist Nina Schrøder has created this year's ornament, "Christmas Candles", sixteenth in the series of Christmas Ornaments from Georg Jensen. It is made if gilded brass and accompanied by a red year ribbon for hanging. Light, symbolised by the candle, has been closely connected with the festival of Christmas since the introduction of Christianity to Scandinavia. According to the Bible the divine light came down to earth when Jesus was born, and so the birth and baptism of Jesus are celebrated with a festival of light at the end of the year. In pagan times there was a similar festival of light at the darkest time of the year. In this case the winter solstice was celebrated with the shortest day in the year, which points the way forward to brighter times. Nowadays there is a tradition in the run-up to Christmas of candles in the advent crown, Christmas decorations with candles and, of course, candles on the Christmas tree.
