About the Item

The spiritualist movement may have begun in the 19th century in America, but it was still alive and well at the turn of the century, when this magnificent and rare occult collectible was created. This black enameled steel box with a 56" brass ball chain was designed for a tarot card reader to transport her cards; perhaps moving from table to table at a social event. The interior of the box is lined with thick velour to prevent the tarot cards from becoming bent. The length of the box accommodates larger tarot cards of the era, as well as the shorter ones found today. The front and top is embellished with detailed quarter moons and the corners of the box feature bronze corners, to prevent denting. The long chain is threaded through a pair of brass rings and the top lifts straight up and cannot be lost, because it remains always attached. A stunning, mysterious, entirely hand-crafted artifact from a period in American history when the occult -magic, mysticism, mediumship, fortune telling, psychic phenomena, séances and the like- captivated the mainstream.

Pair Folk Art Paintings on Wood Panel, 1980s, by Moses Tolliver "MoseT"
Located in Southbury, CT
My uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s. Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging. The works have been framed so the pull tab is not visible; if you prefer, simply remove the frames and both pieces will be as created. The snake painting...
