About the Item

A set of 13 beautifully handcrafted 'way of the cross' works of religious art. These rare church stations were handcrafted around 1890-1910 by Julius Klinkhardt of Leipzig (since 1826). Around 1900 (and before that era even more so) most people could not read which is why many of the biblical stories were told by sculptures, paintings and alike. This meaningful and impressive set of color lithographs would have been on the wall of a church or monastery. To make these printed-on-paper lithographs more durable they were glued onto zinc panels after which the gilding was put on by hand. It is hard to see in our photos, but all the halos and all the other golden parts have the color of real gold (because they are). Apart from some minor wear to the frames these quality antiques are in good to very good condition. In the opening on top (as shown in image 19) there used to be a wooden, Gothic trefoil or quatrefoil sign with the station's number on it. The only station that is not with this set is number 14 (the final station) where Jesus is laid in the tomb.
