About the Item

This evocative sculpture, hand-carved in France circa 1780 from solid walnut, depicts Saint John the Baptist, shown in youthful form holding an open book and accompanied by a lamb—his traditional attribute as the herald of Christ. The figure stands 33 inches high by 12.5 inches wide and is carved in the round, with flowing drapery, long hair, and a gentle, contemplative expression that reflects the devotional purpose of the piece. The presence of the lamb clearly identifies the figure as John the Baptist, whose proclamation of Christ as the “Lamb of God” (Agnus Dei) was a central theme in Christian art. His right hand rests gently on the book, a likely reference to prophecy or scripture, and his bare feet, rustic robes, and simplified facial features are consistent with provincial French religious carvings from the 1700s. The 18th century sculpture retains a warm and rich walnut patina; it is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, contributing to its authenticity and character. The back is finished, indicating it may have once stood in a niche or devotional setting. A moving and highly decorative religious work, this piece is ideal for a private chapel, library, or curated interior with antique or ecclesiastical elements. Measures: 12.5"W x 10.5"D x 32"H

Mid-18th Century French Carved Polychrome Statue of Moses in Oak Niche
Located in Dallas, TX
Crafted in France circa 1760 and resting in a carved oak niche, the figure depicts the prophet Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism and Christianity. Moses is best known from the story in the biblical Book of Exodus and Quran as the lawgiver who met God face-to-face on Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments after leading his people, the Hebrews, out of bondage in Egypt and to the "promised land" of Canaan. He is represented with horns on top of his head. The horns came about because of an ambiguity of the Latin version of Exodus 34, 30. After being addressed by God on top of Mount Sinai and given the Tablets of the Law containing the Ten Commandments, Moses descended to his people in the desert. His face was seen to shine with a divine light. (The first Moses with horns was commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb; it was based on a description in chapter 34 of Exodus in the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible used at that time). The religious and biblical item...
