When you think of the life of Saint John the Baptist (or Baptiste as it is spelled here) then you can only come to the conclusion that in fact he was one of the most important human beings in the history of the world in general and of Christianity in particular. Saint John is sometimes depicted with a lamb to symbolise his recognition of Jesus as the Son of God. When John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan he said 'Behold, the Lamb of God'. In this case the sculptor chose to portray a standing lamb which is a rare feature and this antique was obviously carved in the Baroque Style. This Style is less detailed (or some would say 'more naive') than for example the Renaissance Style, but there are many collectors who love and collect this Style. Rare and good condition, Gothic-art shrine for standing or wall-hanging.
This handsome and decorative, Gothic wall shrine is completely hand-crafted out of solid oak and it will look awesome, no matter where you decide to mount or place her. It must have taken its creator quite a few days to first draw this intricate design on paper and then hand carve the entire piece out of solid oak. The Gothic Style elements are deeply handcarved in both doors and they make this shrine highly decorative and an absolute joy to own and look at. This cabinet chapel (or chapel cabinet) comes with its brass lock in perfect working order and also with its original gothic style key. The handgrip is in fact a Gothic trefoil symbol (for the trinity). What also makes this piece extra attractive is the Gothic church window-like frame behind the doors. Most impressive objets d’art, born in France in the second half of the 19th century, most likely Parisian gilded bronze and brass ormolu work, exceptionally executed sculptural form, the exquisitely detailed architectural cathedral shaped case having a removable pointed steeple roof with cross finial, opening to relic display case surrounded on all sides by original glazed glass panes, stepped base, rising on disc feet. Signed, stamped by maker / bronzier "BC" (unknown) model "5096" and other faint marks to lid interiors.

History:
A reliquary (also referred to as a shrine, by the French term châsse or monstrance) is a container for important religious relics.
The earliest reliquaries were essentially boxes, either simply box-shaped or based on an architectural design, taking the form of a model of a church with a pitched roof. These latter are known by the French term chasse, and typical examples from the 12th to 14th century have wooden frameworks with gilt-copper plaques nailed on, decorated in champlevé enamel. Limoges was the largest production centre; NB the English usage differs from that of the French châsse, which denotes large size rather than shape.
Relics of the True Cross became very popular from the 9th century onward and were housed in magnificent gold and silver cross-shaped reliquaries decorated with enamels and precious stones. From about the end of the 10th century, reliquaries in the shape of the relics they housed also became popular; hence, for instance, the skull of Pope Alexander I was housed in a head-shaped reliquary. Similarly, the bones of saints were often housed in reliquaries that recalled the shape of the original body part, such as an arm or a foot.
A philatory is a transparent reliquary designed to contain and exhibit the bones and relics of saints. This style of reliquary has a viewing portal to view the relic inside. The feretrum was a medieval form of reliquary or shrine containing the sacred effigies and relics of a saint.
During the later Middle Ages, the monstrance form, primarily used for consecrated hosts, was sometimes used for reliquaries. These housed the relic in a rock crystal, or glass capsule mounted on a column above a base, enabling the relic to be displayed to the faithful. Reliquaries in the form of large pieces of metalwork jewellery also appeared around this time, housing tiny relics such as pieces of the Holy Thorn, notably the Holy Thorn Reliquary now in the British Museum.

Superb museum quality examples, in excellent original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged patina. Wear consistent with age and use. Heavily patinated - scattered oxidation. Overall wonderful examples.
Typically reliquaries were not sold in pairs, so to find a matching pair such as this is exceptionally rare.

Exceptional and unique, 3 feet tall, Gothic Revival wall barometer, circa 1890.
This unique antique from the second half of the 19th century, in our view, is the dream of anyone with a Gothic (inspired) interior. This design could not be more Gothic and to have found a barometer of this size and with this many Gothic details, again, felt like a blessing. And even though we had to pay-up to be able to acquire it, when you find an antique that is this rare and good then you should always try to buy it. This monumental and solid nutwood antique barometer is entirely hand carved and, as you can see in our photos, the workmanship is second to none. This work of Gothic wall art is perfectly symmetrical and we love the fact that only the large church pilars are carved in a different pattern. This rare design feature, to us, shows the creative nature of its designer. We also love the many Gothic church spires on top and the way this entire 'composition' is superbly balanced. There also is small 'ledge' underneath the barometer and thermometer, possibly for displaying some small sculptures. The only downside would be that the inside of the barometer/thermometer is not squeaky clean. Maybe it is easy to open the front of the barometer, but we have no experience with that. Have you also noticed the amazingly detailed Gothic leafs at the top of both the large pilars? They too display the amazing workmanship of a seasoned craftsman. Besides the enormous height and width, what also makes this rare barometer truly impressive is its depth, because this almost gives you the idea of looking at a magnificent barometer through 3D glasses. Crucifix on Calvary, called 'Pestis Christi' or Crucifiix Pestis 'Plague of Christ' or Plague Crucifix). The sculpture is composite, made with heterogeneous materials: wax, wood, papier-mâché. The octagonal base is slightly raised and supports the calvary, symbolized by rocks, from which the crucifix rises, made with intentionally unfinished boards and with marked veins. The depicted Christ is peculiar: he shows scarified skin all over his body. Masterfully crafted in wax. They are the plagues of the plague that Christ, 'Agnus Dei' takes charge of with salvific value, for the salvation of the world.
