An 18th Century European Purim Pewter Plate for Collecting Alms
About the Item
This 18th-century pewter Purim plate is a rare and historically significant item associated with Jewish traditions. It features decorative engravings likely used for collecting alms, especially during Purim, a Jewish holiday that emphasizes charity - Matanot L'evyonim or gifts to the poor. The handcrafted details reflect both religious devotion and artistry. The designs are relatively simple but intentional, with stylized figures, architectural elements, and Hebrew inscriptions.
Made of pewter, a durable yet malleable alloy common in household and ceremonial items during the 18th century.
The imagery is engraved with scenes depicting characters involved in traditional customs performed on the Purim day. At the top of the Inner plate is a scene of Matanot L'evyonim, below a scene of the reading from a megi;lah scrollflanked by a person dressed as a jester and a young boy with a grogger to one side and the other a depiction of Haman hanging from the Gallows.
Hebrew script is engraved along the rim and the inner portion of the plate featuring biblical verses and phrases relateing to the charity amount given during the times of the temple and on the Purim holiday. This plate may have been specifically used for collecting alms during Purim.
This plate is a significant artifact in Jewish households or synagogues in Europe, symbolizing the values of charity and community during Purim. Its survival into the modern day makes it a valuable piece for collectors of Judaica and antique ceremonial objects.
