A Purim Grogger by Jacobs late 20th Century

About the Item

A Purim Grogger by Jacobs, made in the late 20th Century. Grogger (noisemaker) is shaped in the figure of a red and blue clown with his arms and legs outstretched and connected to the grogger's main stem. The tongue of the clown is protruding from his mouth and serves as the cog that is fitted into the teeth of the grogger and can be freely rotated to make a loud noise on the festival of Purim. Red and blue ball finials are placed at each end of the grogger's handle and main stem.

    Pewter Purim dish, Germany, late 18th century. The outer rim has wriggle-work engraving stating “and of sending portions one to another and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22). Interspersed between some of the words are depictions of foliage and flowers. Large decorative star in which the very center has three interlocking fish. This dish was used for the custom of sending gifts of food to friends or neighbors during Purim. In Central Europe, nuts and candied or dried fruit were the usual treats extended.
