19th Century pair of Ex Voto Carved Wooden Symbols An antique pair of 'Ex Voto' or Votive in the form of a carved hand and foot. Dated 1864, Ex Voto or Votives were a way of petitioning God or saints for relief from troubles. Religious pilgrims offer these objects in gratitude for their answered prayers, often for recovery from an illness or injury. Ex-votos can take the form of paintings or sculptures made from a variety of materials including wood, cloth, or wax & usually represent parts of the body that have been healed. The petitioner in this case very likely recovered from an accident or incident involving his hands and feet. Size: Hand - H 6” x W 3” x D 3” Foot - H 3” x W 2.5” x D 2.5” Origin: France Date: 19th Century Condition: Aged Aged naturally over time, these are well used objects with a deep patina across all the surfaces shown. The paint is faded and chipped in areas with loss of surface detail. Hand painted over pine.
