A stunning rustic antique Christian carved wood devotional painting triptych, early 20th century or most likely much older, handmade religious folk art in Medieval / Middle Ages taste, comprised of three folding heavily patinated metal hinged sculptural old wooden panels, richly decorated in rich hand painted polychrome and parcel gilt, depicting a Saint with staff, flanked by two angels. Dimensions: (approx) 15.5" High, 17" Wide, 0.75" Deep (open), 2" Deep (closed); 4lbs A truly remarkable example, that presents wonderfully and it's rich coloring must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Having beautifully aged warm rustic heavily distressed patina over the whole, wood and chippy paint losses, evidence of old powder post beetle damage (absolutely positive it's at least a century old and not present) with pinholes and losses, attractive imperfections, all wear consistent with significant age, use, handling, exposure, & typical of folk art, adding beautiful antique character, elegant warmth, rustic charm, interesting historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time! Born in Italy in the 18th century / possibly late 17th century, figural form, each hand carved from a single log, modeled as opposing figures, parcel gilt polychrome decorated, hollowed central cavity with original glazed glass relic viewing panel, rising on integral marbleized scroll foot base.
