About the Item

Chalice with Weight of Souls. Silver in its color and gilt. Spain, 17th century. Silver chalice with a bell shaped cup decorated in its rose (small and bulbous) with gallons separated from the cup by fine moldings. Balustraded shaft with an oval knot on a bell-shaped or vase-shaped shape that is followed by a cylindrical body with a wide and smooth diameter. Staggered circular foot forming decorated and smooth moldings of different lines (curves, countercurves). The engraved decoration is composed of "ces", oval mirrors, plant motifs, flat segments, architectural elements, etc. combining shiny areas with others of luster pitting. At the base, on the outer molding of the foot, there is a religious figurative scene. The Archangel Saint Michael appears in the scene of the Psychostasis (or Psychostasis) or Weight of Souls, with the devil at the bottom trying to tip the scales in his favor. This image, coming from Byzantium and, in turn, from Egypt, was very common in Europe already during the Romanesque, and was also found during the Gothic in sculpture, painting, etc. From the 16th century, Psychostasis as such does not intervene in the Last Judgment cycles, where Saint Michael usually appears with the sword to expel the devil, although the scales continue to be part of his attributes when he is represented fighting with the devil. The goblet is reminiscent of a chalice dated in the second quarter of the 16th century (perhaps made in Salamanca) and of another in gilt silver dated between 1575 and 1580 (doubtfully attributed to Sebastián de Olivares), both from the Hernández de Mora Collection. Shoe. From this same collection, it is necessary to highlight another chalice, from Burgos, dated between 1580 and 1586 and made by Pedro García Montero, due to its similarity with the present both in the cup and in the decoration of oval mirrors, facing C's, etc. The decoration can already be seen in pieces from the end of the 16th century, and the general shape is reminiscent of pieces from the 17th century (Naval Museum of Ferror, some from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, etc.).
