"Virgin with Child Jesus". Spain, End of the 17th-Early 18th Century

About the Item

Spanish Baroque sculpture is one of the most authentic and personal examples of our art, because its conception and its form of expression arose from the people and from the deepest feelings that nested in it. The state economy was broken, the decadence of the nobility and heavy burdens of the high clergy, monasteries, parishes and cofradias of clergymen and laymen were the driving force for their development, and the works were sometimes financed by popular subscription. Sculpture was thus designed to capture the ideals prevailing in these environments, which were no other than religious, at a time when counterreformist doctrine required a realistic language for art so that the faithful understood and identified with the represented, And an expression endowed with an intense emotional content to increase the fervor and devotion of the people. The religious issue is therefore the preferred theme of Spanish sculpture of this period, which began in the first decades of the century of a priority interest in capturing the natural, to progressively intensifying throughout the century the shaping of values Expressive, which achieves through the movement and variety of gestures, the use of light resources and the representation of moods and feelings."
