About the Item

The fine German antique pewter plate depicts a family scene, as the group sits at the table during the Passover Seder. Around the rim of the plate are various engraved Hebrew inscriptions, and a Star of David that sits at the top of the plate's rim. This stunning antique pewter Seder plate is notable for the fine quality of its engraving work, which depicts the family scene in impressive detail. Passover is a very important religious holiday in the Jewish calendar. The passover celebration commemorates God's liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt, and their subsequent freedom as a people, led by the Moses. Passover is a spring festival, which commences on the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nissan and lasts for seven days (or eight days, in more Conservative or Orthodox Jewish communities). The Passover Seder, for which this beautiful engraved plate was made, is the ritual Jewish feast that marks the beginning of the Passover celebration. Symbolic foods are placed on Seder plates such as this one, and the meal is enjoyed by Jewish communities and families the world over.
