About the Item

Fine and rare antique Russian silver and enamel Holy Trinity icon Moscow, 1853 Marks: Cyrillic D O maker's mark, A C assay master's mark for Aggey Grigorievich Svechin ( Postnikova-Loseva, p.252, #622), 1853, 84, Saint George slaying the Dragon city mark for Moscow- marks are located on the base of the oklad, on the halos and quite unusually on the embossed silver cross indicating spirituality of the silver master. The substantial, heavy silver oklad with cobalt blue and gold enamel plaques identifying God the Father and Jesus Christ, superbly rendered with fine, hand chased details, strong Baroque style border elements, bold stylized clouds, ornate vestments and exquisitely wrought halos. The highly lyrical and spiritual depiction of God the Father, his Son Jesus Christ and the dove between them as the Holy Trinity is quite rare in Russian Orthodox iconography. Most Orthodox Holy Trinity icons are based on Andrei Rublev's masterpiece portraying three angels sitting around a table with the house of Abraham in the background. The present composition is interestingly of Greek origin which became popular from the 15th Century onwards. It depicts the adult Christ as the Son, the Father as the Ancient Days and the white dove as the Holy Spirit, the New Testament Trinity. The imagery is related to a movement in medieval Novgorod known as Christ as the Ancient of Days, Spas Vethiy Denmi, the iconography of the doctrine that Jesus and the Father are one. Orthodox and Byzantine traditions depict the Triune God as in the present icon. It is also held in high esteem by the Roman Catholic Church in teachings of the mystery of the Holy Trinity. The New Testament Trinity appears on the wonder-working icon of Our Lady of Kursk. Beneath the superb silver and enamel oklad, the icon is exquisitely painted in the traditional realistic style. At the top and bottom of the icon faint Cyrillic inscriptions translating to Father, Word and Holy Spirit, Son, Trinity, the Only. Condition: The painting is in exceptionally good condition, cherished for generations. Light professional conservation by one of the best museum-trained icon conservators. The silver halos reinforced from the back. Overall: Very Good.

Antique Russian Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah Rare 5 Color Enamel Icon
Located in New York, NY
A rare Russian five color polychrome enamel bronze travel icon depicting scenes from the life of the Prophet Elijah including the Fiery Ascension. The border in cornflower blue enamel and scrolled foliate elements topped by the Old Slavonic inscription- Obraz Sviatovo Proroka Ulii- Image of the Holy Prophet Elijah. In the upper left corner is of the hand of God on a white enamel background signifying the clouds. To the right is the Fiery Ascension of Elijah with his dynamic winged horses on a background of finely hand chased flames with stylized wind gusts. The Prophet holds the reigns in his right hand and reaches out with his left to his follower Elisha with a mantle for the parting of the waters of the river Jordan. The river Jordan takes center stage in the icon as a dramatic element - a wide swath of flowing waves with the scenes from the life of Elijah depicted to its left: The Prophet Elijah in the wilderness; Elijah hides in the desert and is fed by an Angel; and Elijah and Elisha crossing the river Jordan parted by Elijah's mantle. This scarce icon is especially significant for the Old Believers tradition. The Old Believers were the chief makers of bronze icons, created by using fire rather than painted by hand. The veneration of the Prophet Elijah, who through his sacrifice, was able to call for fire from heaven manifests a special connection for the sect. Fire, ogon in Russian, was viewed as a purifier and a link to the Last Judgement and the end of the world. Polychrome enamel icons...
