Lebedkin and Faberge marks appear together on numerous objects and Erik Kollin was in charge of all Faberge workshops begining in the 1870's and until 1886 when he was replaced by Michael Perkhin. References: Walters Art Museum for a dimunitive icon of Kazan Mother of God, accession number 44.819, Ivan Lebedkin and Vasilii Semenov; Christie's February 8, 2012, Lot 310 for a slightly larger icon with maker's initials EK. The subject of this icon is of the highest stature in the Russian Orthodox Church. It represents the Virgin Mary as the protector and patron of the city of Kazan and of Russia. The original Our Lady of Kazan icon was believed to have been brought to Russian from Constantinople in the 13th century in honor of the establishment of the Khanate of Kazan. In 1438, the icon disappeared, to be miraculously recovered in 1579 in pristine condition after a young girl had a dream about where it was located, beneath the ruins of a burnt out house. Considered miraculous, the icon became the object of popular devotion and was moved to Moscow. Especially important in the 17th Century with the rise of the Romanov dynasty to power, Our Lady of Kazan was believed to have the power to protect Russia from invading forces. The holy image continues to be one of the most venerarted in the Russian Orthodox church. Six different colors of enamel- white, cobalt blue, green, lavender, sky blue and ochre, each requiring a separate firing, decorate the jewel-like oklad of this beautiful icon. The hand chased details of the vestments are superbly rendered. The icon retains its original finish. It would have been used by an aristoctratic traveler on his or her journey to provide protection the image is credited with. • Antique Russian Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah Rare 5 Color Enamel Icon
    Located in New York, NY
A rare Russian five color polychrome enamel bronze travel icon depicting scenes from the life of the Prophet Elijah including the Fiery Ascension. The border in cornflower blue enamel and scrolled foliate elements topped by the Old Slavonic inscription- Obraz Sviatovo Proroka Ulii- Image of the Holy Prophet Elijah. In the upper left corner is of the hand of God on a white enamel background signifying the clouds. To the right is the Fiery Ascension of Elijah with his dynamic winged horses on a background of finely hand chased flames with stylized wind gusts. The Prophet holds the reigns in his right hand and reaches out with his left to his follower Elisha with a mantle for the parting of the waters of the river Jordan. The river Jordan takes center stage in the icon as a dramatic element - a wide swath of flowing waves with the scenes from the life of Elijah depicted to its left: The Prophet Elijah in the wilderness; Elijah hides in the desert and is fed by an Angel; and Elijah and Elisha crossing the river Jordan parted by Elijah's mantle. This scarce icon is especially significant for the Old Believers tradition. The Old Believers were the chief makers of bronze icons, created by using fire rather than painted by hand. The veneration of the Prophet Elijah, who through his sacrifice, was able to call for fire from heaven manifests a special connection for the sect. Fire, ogon in Russian, was viewed as a purifier and a link to the Last Judgement and the end of the world. Polychrome enamel icons...
