About the Item
Fine antique Russian Orthodox cobalt blue enamel and silver cross
19th Century
Silver and cobalt blue enamel cross with trilobed terminals at the center of which is an engraved eight-pointed Orthodox cross surrounded by abbreviations in Church Slavonic. At the base are a scull and bones flanked by the cyrillic letters G A for the Head of Adam. According to tradition, the remains of Adam, Eve and their descendants were buried directly under the site of the crucifixion at Golgotha and the blood of the crucified Christ washed away their original sin.
Well detailed, in remarkably good conditions for it's age. Beautiful original patina.
