About the Item
Russian Imperial Gilded Silver Icon of Saint Spyridon, Moscow Hallmarks, circa 1890
A finely crafted Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous,(Святой Спиридон Тримифунтский)
The name Спиридон (Spyridon) is clearly inscribed at the bottom in Cyrillic.
Spyridon of Trimythous is one of the most venerated early Christian bishops in the Orthodox Church, known for his piety, miracles, and defense of Orthodoxy at the First Council of Nicaea.featuring a richly gilded solid silver oklad (cover), with Moscow hallmarks and 84 zolotnik purity (.875). This devotional panel, dating to the late 19th century, is a striking example of Imperial Russian ecclesiastical silverwork, combining spiritual symbolism with exceptional artisan detail.
Saint Spyridon is depicted frontally in bishop’s vestments, blessing with his right hand while holding a liturgical staff or symbolic flame in his left—a gesture denoting divine wisdom and episcopal authority. His face and hands are delicately hand-painted in egg tempera on gessoed wood, while the rest of the icon is clad in a finely tooled silver repoussé cover adorned with a detailed crosshatch background and floral motifs along the border.
At the lower edge, an engraved nameplate in Cyrillic identifies the saint as Св. Спиридон (St. Spyridon). Below that, hallmarks confirm the piece’s Moscow origin, with a visible 84 silver standard, an assayer's mark, and a Cyrillic maker's monogram. The silver oklad retains its original gilding, adding a warm radiance to the sculptural quality of the icon.
A work of devotion and artistry, this icon would have served as a personal protector and object of veneration in a private home or small chapel. Today, it stands as a treasured example of Russian Orthodox iconography and silver craftsmanship at its zenith.
