About the Item

Meaningful and a monumental masterpiece: “La Vierge d'Albert” piece of the golden Virgin) by ), cast by Barbedienne, 1916. Step into the poetic depths of history with this extraordinary, large-scale gilt bronze sculpture titled "La Vierge d'Albert", an emotionally charged and symbolically rich work by Albert Dominique Roze (1861–1952), one of France’s most revered sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th century. Gracefully rendered and cast in 1916 by the prestigious F. Barbedienne Foundry, this sculpture is more than an artwork andit is a relic of resilience, faith, and the endurance of hope amidst the ravages of war. Over the past decade or two we have seen and sold many works of religious art, but we never before had the pleasure of offering such a unique bronze handcrafted piece. To have found a piece of this size, this great shape and in this beautiful condition more than made our day. The statue represents the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus aloft. It's known for its graceful and dynamic posture, symbolizing peace and protection. Historical & Artistic Significance: This luminous bronze, resting on an elegant rouge griotte marble base, depicts the Virgin Mary lifting the Christ Child heavenward, an image immortalized as "La Vierge Dorée d'Albert" and once crowning the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Brebières in Albert, France. The original was destroyed during the First World War, becoming a powerful symbol of both devastation and divine protection. Etched with the date 25 Mai 1916, this particular cast was created during the height of the war and a poignant echo of the original statue's collapse after months of relentless shelling. Roze’s signature ("ALB ROZE") and Barbedienne’s foundry mark ("F.B.") are both clearly inscribed, anchoring this piece firmly in the heritage of European monumental sculpture. La Vierge d'Albert" is not just a devotional image and it is a beacon of French wartime endurance, once believed to signify the fate of the war itself: legend said that when the statue fell, the war would end. In that symbolic descent, and in this glorious recreation, we find the eternal dance between loss and hope. This piece is ideal for the discerning collector of religious iconography, lovers of French historic art, or curators of emotionally powerful 20th-century bronzes. If this unique statue from the early 1900, strikes a cord in you then maybe you should be its next custodian. Again great value for money. Antique Hand Carved Large Size Statue of Saint Joseph and Child Jesus Sculpture
Located in Lisse, NL
Large and high quality carved antique sculpture of Joseph holding the child Jesus. If you are looking for a great value for money, work of religious art then this quality carved church relic could be gracing your home or monastery or house of prayer soon. This may not have been carved out of the most expensive or hard woodtype, but that is not what this antique is about. This striking and meaningful sculpture is all about the natural manner in which both the little boy Jesus and Saint Joseph have been hand-carved out of wood and how an accomplished sculptor clearly has spent a whole lot of time, focus and dedication to get the details of this large and meaningful sculpture very right. In this case, the hands and feet, the curly hair, the serene facial expressions, the perfectly natural body postures AND the perfect draping of the cloths are the most eye-catching details. Ones that most mortals would never be able to create like this and it will have taken this skilled artisan weeks rather than days to create. We believe that this unique antique is made of basswood or pine and it has been hand patinated (original). This was probably done to make the entire sculpure look more warm and calm (no wood grains taking away anything from the beautiful details we described). This meaningful and quality crafted work of religious art is ready for you to enjoy and, to us, it breathes a holy serenity and beauty that will never fail to impress. No matter where you decide to have it on display, this ecclesiastical antique will never fail to impress and if you already have a place in mind for 'them' then maybe you should be their next custodian.
