About the Item

Rare early 19th-century equinoctial sundial in turned and engraved brass, signed Samuel Yeates Dublin (1762-1834). Good working condition. Measures 9.5x2 cm - inches 3.8x0.7. The last photo is the gift box. This is an ancient time-measuring instrument, which allows the user to know daylight saving time simply by observing the shadow produced by the gnomon perpendicular to the needle whose orientation is given by the magnetic compass. Turned brass case complete with lid, on the bottom of which is finely engraved by burin a fine eight-twenty rose complete with goniometric circle divided into 360°. In the center of the sundial is the gnomon, fixed above the compass protection glass; placing the instrument in the North/South position, the gnomon casts its shadow in the circle of the ring where the following are engraved by burin daylight hours in Roman characters. The sundial is a horizontal line passing through the North and South points. Sundial, in our language, is also synonymous with sundial. From ancient times to the present day, sundials have been made that varied in type, shape, and size, such as portable models that performed the functions of our wristwatches and pocket watches. Different peoples and different cultures then adopted various ways of measuring time according to their needs: in fact, ancient sundials can still be observed that do not follow the hours we use today (astronomical hours) but, for example, Babylonian hours, Italic hours, canonical hours, etc. Samuel Yates founded his business in Dublin in 1762; earlier he had been apprenticed to another Irish optician. In 1790 he opened a store that would be the basis for the business until 1922, Yates did not limit himself to optical instruments but also produced mathematical and scientific and measuring instruments such as compasses, theodolites and barometers. The company defined itself as a manufacturer of instruments for the university, going so far in the early 1900s as to develop telephones. One of the sons moved to London where in 1833 he became head of instruments at Greenwich Astronomical Observatory.

This fine, antique mantel clock is constructed in ebonised wood by the renowned Parisian maker of automata, Xavier Tharin (French, active mid 19th Century).
