About the Item

Absolutely exquisite pair of operable mother of pearl high quality luxury French Opera Glasses with fancy lorgnette style handle and metal mounts. Premium mother of pearl and only the most glowing pearlescent shells of abalone or oyster, particularly pleasing in color, were used in the making of these Victorian binoculars; of a French maker and marked "in the round" of the left front eye piece "Le Roi, Paris" . The right eye piece is marked "A & D Feldenheimer Portland, Or.". This type of opera glass with mother of pearl embellishment was a French specialty and was the finish design choice of the upper echelon of society. Not often found with the rotating handle, these opera glasses were treated as an item, much like jewelry with fancy accoutrements like a mother of pearl application made for the aristocracy. The condition is excellent; the glasses and lenses are clean and functional; focusing knob is operable; the mother of pearl is beautifully applied to the surface. Condition is excellent and completely all original. These are marked and authentic; beware of later made in Japan "copycats". 6" high (height of the handle when open---rotates) 4 1/4" wide 2 1/4" deep Note: A. & C. Feldenheimer (for whom these opera glasses were made as marked in the eyepiece) was a well known luxury goods retailer commencing business in 1891 in Portland, Oregon; much like Nieman Marcus of Dallas Texas, and Gumps of San Francisco, California. "Le Roi, Paris" (meaning "The King of Paris") as marked in the other eye piece was the maker, obviously marketing and emphasizing quality fit for royalty. Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been dealing in fine quality decorative arts, furniture, jewelry, and paintings for more than 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.
