About the Item

Antique Hickory Golf Club, Tom Fernie, Royal Lytham St. Annes A fine quality socket head, persimmon and hickory spoon golf club wood by Tom Fernie, Royal Lytham St. Annes. The hickory shaft with polished leather grip. This great looking club has a polished persimmon wood club head, lead weight to the rear, traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole and a partial brass sole plate. The head is dark with a pale strip (almost an alignment line) which has been stamped 'Tom Fernie, Royal Lytham St. Annes, Special'. Tom R. Fernie (son of 1883 Open Golf Champion, Willie Fernie) was born in Troon and was a professional at Turnberry Golf Club 1911 - 1926 and then Royal Lytham St. Annes until his retirement in 1951. The measurements shown are the length of the whole club, the width of the face and depth of the head. A great golf club in usable condition for modern hickory play. Approximate 20° loft & swing weight A4. Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present course constructed in 1897. The club was bestowed with its "Royal" title by George V shortly before it hosted its first Open Championship in 1926. The clubhouse celebrated its centenary in 1998. It is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to eleven Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women's and Seniors Open Championships. There are 167 bunkers on the course lining the fairways and surrounding the greens. It is a challenging course which demands shot accuracy from its players.
