About the Item
Mingays Liquid Core Bramble Golf Ball.
A very nice bramble pattern golf ball with original paint which remains bright and with minimal paint loss. The gutta percha covered, rubber core, golf ball is marked 'Mingays Patent, 20905' on a raised circle, with seven brambles in its center, on one pole and 'Liquid Core, Rubber Ball' on the other, this style of naming is known as the Vardon Flyer style. Manufactured by J.P. Cochrane & Co. Ltd., Murano Works, Albert Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, who was founded by J. P. Cochrane. In 1906 Cochrane was originally in the golf ball business but later entered the club market. The ball is with the classic bramble pattern, raised dimples.
Mingays UK Patent No. 20905, 16th October 1905 and USA Patent No. 889,709, 1908 covers 'a ball with a liquid center'.
The ball is approximately 4.3 cm in diameter.
The rubber core ball (the ancestor of the modern ball) began its life in the late 1890's. The first mass produced rubber core ball was by Coburn Haskell of Cleveland, Ohio. The first core balls were hand wound with elastic thread with a Gutta-percha cover, moulded with the raised square mesh pattern of their predecessor. The slight irregularities in the early wound balls made them quite lively, it was not until the invention of the automatic winding machine by John Gammeter (an engineer at Goodrich) and the change of pattern from mesh to bramble that the balls became more consistent and predictable.
