About the Item
Vintage Herbert Sutcliffe Cricket Pads.
A pair of Mid-20th century white cricket pads in good condition with leather securing straps. The rear of the pads with stamp - Herbert Sutcliffe Ltd., Sports Outfitters, Leeds, Herbert Sutcliffe Leg guard, Stuart Surridge & Co. Limited, makers.
On 30 September 2009, Herbert Sutcliffe was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. Herbert Sutcliffe (1894 - 1978) is universally regarded as one of the greatest-ever opening English Cricket Batsman and batted for Yorkshire and England. For much of his Test career, which spanned from 1924 to 1935, Sutcliffe opened the batting for England with his fellow Hall of Fame member Jack Hobbs in what is regarded as the most formidable partnership England has ever seen. He played in 54 Tests for England and scored 4555 runs at an average of more than 60.
The pads came in a leather cricket bag with a letter from News Chronicle. The letter states that Mr. J.B. McDougall had won a voucher in the "News Chronicle" Cricket Scheme in June 1935. This entitled him to go personally to Messrs Herbert Sutcliffe Ltd., and select his prize. If he was unable to go personally, he could make his selection from their catalogue. We believe that these 'Herbert Sutcliffe Leg guards' were part of that prize.
The price is for the pads only, bat & balls sold separately.
